On Praise
[24 Chapter 24]
234 [ Kural 234]
Meaning:
If one has acquired extensive fame within the limits of this earth, the world of the Gods will no longer praise those sages who have attained that world.
On Praise
One day Archuna asked Krishna:
'My brother Dharman, does charity as the main part of his life. He never refuses any one any help when people ask. Even though all the people praise Karnan as the best philanthropist and not my brother Dharma. Why is that?'
Krishna replied, 'Karna's philanthropic attitudes are much better than those of Dharma's'.
'Why is that? You are also thinking like others?', Archuna asked, highly upset by Krishna's reply.
'Shall I show you why?' asserted Lord Krishna.
During the Mahabhartha war, the one who served as a charioteer for Archuna, gained victory for justice, and he would definitely prove that, Archuna thought.
Krishna transformed himself into the guise of a Brahmin and asked Archuna to do the same.
When Krishna prayed Varna – the God of rain, heavy rain poured. Both Krishna and Arjuna got soaked in the rain.
Both Brahmins went first to Dharma's palace. (Yuthistra)
Dharma welcomed both with all due respect. Archuna looked at Krishna with pride seeing his brother's actions.
Krishna asked Dharma, 'Oh! King Pandu's great son!, the famous philanthropist, due to this heavy rain, all the firewood that we had, got wet and we couldn't cook any food, nor could we keep our fireplace warm. Please offer some firewood for us, so that we can cook.'
Dharma, after a pause and brief thought, replied:
'All the firewood here was used to cook food for the people of the palace. Fresh firewood could be cut, but those would be of no use, as they would also be wet by now..., I am unable to provide dry firewood right now. As an alternative, I can offer you food. Please come and bring your family here, so that all of them can have food and keep warm.'
On hearing this, Krishna looked at Archuna and said, 'Come Archuna .. let us visit Karna and ask him'
Both Krishna and Arjuna, in their guise as Brahmins, arrived at Karna's palace.
On seeing the two brahmins, Karnan happily welcomed them with all due respect and asked them what he could do for them.
Archuna asked him,
'Would you please help us by offering some dry firewood so that we can use to keep our fireplace warm and cook some food?'
Karna, without saying a word, took his bow and arrow at once and started aiming at the doors and windows of his palace. All the doors and windows were shattered and fell on the floor.
Archuna was highly surprised by what Karna did.
Archuna stood still, highly shocked to see this. Karna gathered all the broken pieces of wood, and gave it to them, saying - 'Your fireplace will now burn! and you can cook your food,'
Krishna looked at Archuna with a meaningful smile on his face.
Archuna got the perfect answer for his question and had his doubt cleared.
